Setting up IPhone© to connect to VE3TTT

SORT has found that the IPhone© Version 4.5 works the best for us, so these instructions are specific meant to setup that version of software. Version 5.0 has been released but we found it too unreliable for unattended use.
  1. Download Iphone© Version 4.5 from the http://www.qsl.net/va3tjs/iphone45.exe
  2. After the file is downloaded, run the installation file. (It should be iphone45.exe) Follow the prompts and enter the correct information about yourself and be sure to include your callsign.
  3. After the installation is complete, you are going to need to get an update for Iphone© 4.5 because it is fairly old. You need the following two files:
    1. http://www.qsl.net/va3tjs/servers.exe
    2. http://www.qsl.net/va3tjs/ircsrvrs.ini
The first file is the "Updater Utility" and the second is the "New Servers List".
  4. Run the Updater Utility and it will make the neccessary changes to your servers list that IPhone© uses to communicate with others.
  5. When you start IPhone© two different windows will come up. The first is "Vocaltec Internet Phone" and the other is "Internet Phone Global OnLine Directory". The program in the first window is the telephone like interface that shows you who you are talking to and gives some statistics about data loss and who is currently speaking. The second window is used to connect other people on the internet. It kind of acts like a phone book that shows you who is currently online.

  6. Import New Change: Because Vocaltec appears to be abandoning the IPhone products. I highly suggest you increase the amount of time it takes to connect to a server. Normally the program would only wait 30 seconds before it give up and tries to contact a new server. Since many people are trying to use the few server that remain this time usually expires before you get logged in. If you increase the time it has to wait your chances of getting connected are better. To do this, in "VocalTec Internet Phone" click on the "View" menu then select "Options". A window like the one below will appear. You must then click on the "Global Online Directory" icon in this window. Once this is done, you can use the mouse to increase the value beside "Try Another Server After:" I suggest the maiximum amount of time (120 seconds). Hopefully this will help people who were unable to connect before.

  7. We are not finished yet... To keep non-amateurs from accessing the repeater we only list SORT in Private Chat Rooms (like a private phone book). To access this chat room you will have to enter some data. In the global online directory click on the "Chat Room" menu and then select "Private/New" and a new window will pop up. Here is a picture of what to do:
    Opening a private chat room
  8. In new window enter "Ham Radio" in the textbox, and make sure you place a checkmark in the box that say "Private Chat Room". Just like this:
  9. When you click on "OK" it will enter you in to this room, and you should see other hams and repeaters listed in the Global Online Directory. To call some one just doulbe click on their name, and IPhone will start to ring and your call will be automatically answered if it is a repeater, and manually answered if they are a ham. You might have to click on the first tab to see the list. (In the example below it says "4 Joined Chat Rooms", but in yours it should read "1 Joined Chat Room".)
